The Future of Air Transport

18th Annual Conference: Towards a profitable, sustainable and secure aviation industry. One of the sector's leading forums, this conference enjoys the support of airlines, airports and industry suppliers who converge on London every December to network and listen to careful analysis of key topics.
The aviation sector is facing some of the worst market conditions in living memory. Although oil prices have fallen from their record highs, offering airlines some respite, the global recession has subsequently caused dramatic falls in traffic and declining yields, forcing many airlines to cut capacity and in some cases ground aircraft.
Despite these difficulties, it is important not to focus entirely on the present. The size and shape of the aviation sector will have to change upon a return to growth and The Future of Air Transport 2009 will provide a forum for senior stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the industry and to explore strategies to ensure a strong, profitable aviation sector will emerge from the current downturn.

SMARTFREIGHT Final Conference

13-14 October 2010, Trondheim, Norway
Over the last three years, SMARTFREIGHT, a research project co-funded by the European Commission, has developed a new concept to integrate urban traffic management systems with the management of freight and logistics in urban areas. Building on the cooperative technology developed in European projects such as CVIS, ICT solutions have been assessed to allow bi-directional wireless communication with individual freight vehicles, so operations can be better supported and controlled. This new concept could lead to a more efficient, environmentally friendly and safer urban freight transport.
In order to evaluate the SMARTFREIGHT potential, the city of Trondheim provided a dedicated technical test site, while simulations took place in Winchester and Bologna, and a desktop study was carried out in Dublin. In addition, different European and local key stakeholders were consulted throughout the project.
This final conference will highlight the new SMARTFREIGHT solutions and will illustrate several possible applications. Thanks to the unique location of the event, a demonstration will show in practice how the ICT infrastructure set in Trondheim can eventually be used to better coordinate urban and freight management systems.
