InterBaltic - Intermodality and Interoperability in the Baltic Sea Region

The project complied with TEN, Motorways of the Sea, The Northern Dimension and national/supranational politics and objectives.
The project consisted of 4 Work Packages (WP) which:
- design common strategies and prerequisites for actions based on existent information and analyses
- build an ICT framework for intermodal transport planning in the region
- bring strategies and plans onto concrete actions based on groups of key products

Added value for SMEs

The concrete actions involved close relationships between public, research and some major business partners, forming PPP networks and address at least 2-3 product groups of interest e.g. forest products, ore/minerals and seafood. Companies related to these groups were invited to discuss and decide actions. The target was to achieve more effective logistics in the region. Actions leaded to substantial improvements. Result indicators - better logistics regarding costs, volumes and shift from road to rail and sea. Compliance with other initiatives and programmes were important. Actions and business development were to address TEN-T network, emerging East-West corridors and North Sea - Baltic Motorways of the Sea.

The InterBaltic project had been focused on preparing the grounds for a common intermodal transport strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, including views on future transport policy like priorities regarding infrastructure investments, fiscal issues and new services. During the Conferences of Project the private industry was invited to give their views on how to make transport a tool to strengthen the development Baltic Sea area and to make the region a strong competitor in Europe in terms of developing human resources and businesses.
