ASAP - Asset Surveillance and Protection

The objective of the ASAP project was to introduce a new concept for asset surveillance and protection in Europe that will be affordable, accurate and user-friendly. ASAP system was supposed to be a designated wireless, info-mobility, low cost system that enabled the user to track, locate and monitor in real time, all types of freight, including hazardous materials, as they were transported across Europe.
The system was to improve logistic management of assets while being transported across Europe, based on location and security information.
The end unit was connected to sensors and was therefore capable of monitoring the state of the freight online. Online data were integrated with existing information databases of the transport operators and provided a comprehensive "smart tracking and protection system". Location and status information were accessible to both the mobile user and via the Internet. The system was supposed to be integrated with a European-wide ITS database providing immediate benefits both to the European citizen and to the European transport industry.
In the first stage, user requirements and needs were identified and defined, based on extensive survey of potential customer and freight and logistics operators including SMEs.
The demonstration stage was held at a company Versteijnen's Internationaal Transportbedrijf B.V.(Nehterland) and NEXUS-TELOCATION SYSTEMS LTD (Israel).
Finally the result of ASAP project was the system, that in the end seemed quite expensive with already old technology, due to the fast technology development in the period of the project lifetime. Due to that an architecture was created and the implementation stage was suspended and none of SMEs participated in the implementation of the results.
