Baltic Tangent - Developing Regions through Spatial Planning and Logistics & ICT Competence |
![]() |
The Baltic Tangent (BT) was defined as the strengthening of the sum of all tangents to the primary transport networks as a basis for the development of a strong economic corridor through the geographical defined area in the regions of DK, S, LV/ES and Russia. Therefore the BT project emphasized interdependent actions, which are needed to develop a strategy for economic growth in periphery regions by integrating and combining spatial planning/ programming and new transport solutions by enhancing the secondary transport networks and merging them into the TEN-T. The vision is implemented by the BT project, which was divided into four Work Packages with the following outcome: - Spatial planning in the BT - where the strategic focus is on spatial programming & planning as framework conditions for development of infrastructure in the BT promoting sustainable growth. - New transport strategies in the BT - where the strategic focus is on development of transport and logistics solutions enhancing the conditions for sustainable business growth in the BT area |

Added value for SMEs The Baltic Tangent Logistics project will achieve the above-stated goals of cheaper, faster and more reliable transport by devising new transport solutions: these include door-to-door transport chains, facilitated border-crossing to Russia and one-stop administrative shopping among other innovative logistic solutions. The results of the project included practical implementation through Test and Try activities. This is to ensure that although the project had a strong emphasis on the political and research aspects, its results were based on tested logistics solutions and directly usable. To define results and recommendations from research projects and from pilot and demonstration activities which will support the development of rail freight services dependent on the uninterrupted movement of freight trains (in the first stage with minimum delays at border crossings and hubs). To minimize delays and improve reliability on the network by: • Improving the organization of international services • IT and paperless work • Implementing ERTMS • Harmonizing standards • Supporting the development of human resources (e.g. through mechanisms such as fellowships and grants) and social policy (e.g. employment support to SMEs) • Examining opportunities to revive and promote rail as an environmentally friendly and safe transport mode |
