BRAVO - Brenner Rail Freight Action Strategy Aimed At Achieving A Sustainable Increase Of Intermodal Transport Volume By Enhancing Quality, Efficiency, And System Technologies

The Brenner Corridor is one of the most loaded international transit corridors, where - on a length of only 448 km between Munich and Verona - three countries and thus railway infrastructures and the Alps (inclination Brenner north ramp 26 ‰) have to be bridged. The identified research and demonstration activities have been transferred into the BRAVO Project:
* BRAVO will lay foundations for achieving a significant and sustainable increase in intermodal volume on the Brenner corridor, and is designed as a blueprint applicable to other European corridors;
* BRAVO involves key players active in rail freight and particular combined transport services on the Corridor and has established working groups with all stakeholders.
* The corridor management is performed by an open and flexible platform model while maintaining and improving the business relations between partners.
The development and demonstration of following components for conventional rail freight and intermodal services on the Brenner Corridor:
* coherent and open corridor management scheme;
* interoperable rail traction involving multi-current locomotives and including train path re-scheduling to gain more capacity;
* EDP supported quality management system;
* advanced customer information system generating estimated-time-of-availability information;
* medium-term extension plan on intermodal services;
* application of innovative mega-trailer pocket wagon technology aiming at capturing the fast growing market of mega semitrailers;
* demonstration of innovative technology to capture conventional semitrailers for unaccompanied intermodal transport.

Added value for SMEs

Within the framework of BRAVO an Information System for Combined Transport has been developed, which includes European wide services of intermodal operators such as Kombiverkehr and other cooperation partners. After the end of the BRAVO Project this tool has started its commercial operation and can be entered via the Kombiverkehr website.

The added value for SMEs participating in the project was to establish a network of international business contacts in the intermodal sphere, gain experience with EU funded projects and create software for train monitoring and customer information in international, intermodal rail freight services.
Added value for non-participating SMEs, e.g. road transport companies, forwarders and logistics service providers is that they could use the services created by the consortium partners, which is mainly a network of intermodal trains on the north-south corridor via the Brenner. Other companies could benefit from the research efforts invested by the project partners when buying their products, e.g. a mega-trailer pocket wagon.
