CREAM - Customer-Driven Rail-Freight Services On A European Mega-Corridor Based On Advanced Business And Operating Models

Initiated by important stakeholders of the railway business the CREAM-Project had been set up to respond to the increasing demand for rail-based logistics systems. Within the framework of the project customer-driven rail-freight services have been developed and started on a European mega-corridor. This transport corridor has got an entire length of about 3.150 km and draws a bow between Western and Central Europe and the Balkan states towards Turkey/Greece.
The CREAM project has been initiated and is coordinated by HaCon in cooperation with KombiConsult. The project contains a number of technological and operational improvement activities, which have been identified by the stakeholders on the corridor as crucial for the development of rail freight. Stakeholders are rail infrastructure operators, railway operators, intermodal operators and their customers. The project activities are primarily based on the corridor analysis and the corridor action plan, adopted in the framework of the TREND project (Towards new Rail freight quality and concepts in the European Network in respect to market Demand), which has been funded by the European Commission within the 6th Framework Program as a Coordination Action.
CREAM has led to an increase in rail freight transport on this important East-West freight corridor and thereby contributed to the EU transport policy goals. The project is funded by the European Commission as an Integrated Project within the 6th Framework Program.

The CREAM improvement activities have been integrated into an innovative corridor-related freight service concept; they are related to:
* Innovative rail-based supply chains including intelligent rail and multimodal operation models
* Quality management system
* Interoperability and border crossing
* Integrated telematics solutions for train control, tracking & tracing of shipments and customer information
* Rail logistics for temperature-controlled cargoes
* New technology for the transport of unaccompanied semi-trailers in intermodal transport

Added value for SMEs

CREAM partners have developed numerous rail freight services on the axis between Belgium / The Netherlands and Turkey / Greece. Most of these services are open for SMEs especially from the forwarding and logistics sector.
CREAM has developed organisational improvements like improved border processes and quality management measures. These are the basis for offering their customers high quality rail freight services.
CREAM has developed technological innovations. Most of them are ready to be exploited by SMEs outside the consortium on a commercial basis:
• NavMaster - intelligent tracking with GPS & WPAN technology
developed by Eureka
• Train Monitor - the integrated IT system for real-time and ex-post train monitoring
developed by HaCon in collaboration with Kombiverkehr
• FLOATRAILER - the first float glass trailer which can be fully integrated in intermodal production systems
developed by OZV
• ISU - the unique handling technology for road-rail transhipment of non-cranable semi-trailer
developed by Rail Cargo Austria in collaboration with Ökombi
• Futura - the innovative dual power loco concept
developed by Voith Turbo
