FREIGHTWISE - Management Framework for Intelligent Intermodal Transport

The FREIGHTWISE is a finalized FP6 integrated project funded by DG TREN that introduces a conceptual framework to improve the interoperability between systems that are being used in intermodal/co-modal transport management.
The overall objective of FREIGHTWISE was to promote the modal shift from exclusive road use to intermodal / co-modal freight transport predominantly by using the capabilities of modern information and telecommunications technology (ICT). The intention was to bring together
- Transport Management (shippers , forwarders, operators and agents),
- Traffic and Infrastructure Management (rail, road, short sea shipping, inland waterways), and
- Administration (customs, border crossing, hazardous cargo handling, safety and security)
to support the EU policy objectives related to co-modality, balancing the use of the complete transport infrastructure, and improved interoperability along the intermodal transport chain.
BMT were co-ordinators of this large integrated project which involved 66 partners throughout Europe.
To meet its objectives, FREIGHTWISE developed a reference model for freight transport (FREIGHTWISE Framework – FWF), which along with supporting mechanisms was tested in nine business cases. FREIGHTWISE did not deal with optimization of transport processes – these remains to be done by transport managers.
