PROMIT - Promote Innovative Intermodal Freight Transport

PROMIT was a European Coordination Action (CA) for intermodal freight transport which initiated, facilitated, and supported the coordination and cooperation of national and European initiatives, projects, promotion centres, technology providers, research institutes and user groups related to this most complex transport form. The main strategic objective of PROMIT was to contribute to a faster improvement and implementation of intermodal freight transport technologies and procedures, and to help to Promote Innovative Intermodal Freight Transport and modal shift by creating awareness of innovations, best practices and intermodal transport opportunities for potential users, as well as politicians and research community.

Added value for SMEs

In the context of SMEs development PROMIT aimed to collect, compare and summarise available experiences and results, especially addressing intermodal logistics on East-West corridors, support the exchange of know-how, experiences and best practices among SME and other concerned subjects, as well as establish an active information and coordination platform for intermodal logistics. Finally, PROMIT intended to strengthen the Europe an intermodal transport industry as well as the inter modal transport oriented technology suppliers within their international market position.
Starting point for the PROMIT promotion strategy matrix was the structuring of information collected and processed in PROMIT towards SME and other industrial companies in a user oriented format. This supposed to support intermodal promotion centers in doing their work, better integration of SMEs within them, however, also provide transport users the possibility to get direct access to information on intermodal solutions. The efforts of the project partners were orientated towards organisation and business models, intermodal infrastructure and equipment, information and communication technologies, operation and services, security, safety, legislation and policy.
The most visible benefit of PROMIT was the cooperation initiative for the all concerned subjects within transport and logistics field. This is also very relevant for SMEs. Based on the effective example of PROMIT, most of the partners initiated the establishment of the cooperation platforms (with an aim to promote intermodal transport) among transport and logistics structures in relevant countries. Lithuania was not an exception. Some important companies as well as institutions, including Lithuanian Railways and VGTU, participated in the PROMIT. The elaborated knowledge-exchange system had stimulated an idea to establish Lithuanian Intermodal Transport Technology Platform which also includes SMEs (the associations of various SMEs) and serves as an effective tool for dissemination of information and best practices to SMEs.
